The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has a new acting chief after Md Sarwar retired from service.
Sarwar handed over charge to Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam, who oversees crime and operations, on Thursday night.
The government has yet to appoint a full-time chief for the city police following the resignation of Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali in February, bdnews24.com reports.
NM Nasiruddin, deputy commissioner for public relations at the DMP, confirmed the development to bdnews24.com.
“Following the retirement of [commissioner Sazzat], the government did not appoint a permanent successor. As the next senior officer, Md Sarwar had been serving as acting commissioner. Thursday was his last working day,” Nasiruddin said.
“As he begins post-retirement leave, Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam, the next most senior officer, is taking charge as acting commissioner,” he said.
The post fell vacant after Sazzat resigned on February 25, citing “personal and family” reasons.
He had taken charge on November 20, 2024.
