Rezaul Karim Mallick has been removed from his post as chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), effective immediately, following controversy surrounding the recent arrest of model Meghna Alam.
The decision was announced in an official order signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali on Saturday, according to local media.
Model Meghna Alam was arrested last week and sent to jail under a 30-day detention order issued under the Special Powers Act. The arrest, carried out by the DMP DB, sparked criticism, with Adviser Asif Nazrul questioning the legality of the procedure at a Sunday press conference.
Rezaul had been serving as DB chief since September 1, 2024. A 17th BCS (Police) cadre officer, he joined the force in 1998 and previously worked in various roles, including with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
