Investigators have identified five of the severely burnt victims from the deadly fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka, days after the disaster left dozens dead, most of them schoolchildren.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed the identifications on Thursday, using DNA analysis, according to Jasim Uddin Khan, special police superintendent.

On Monday afternoon, a Bangladesh Air Force fighter aircraft crashed into a school building at the Milestone School campus in Diabari. The incident, which has so far claimed at least 30 lives, is the deadliest military aviation disaster in Bangladesh’s history.

Many of the victims were badly burnt, making visual identification impossible. Authorities had requested missing persons’ families to come forward and provide DNA samples for forensic matching. Of the six charred bodies that remained unidentified, the CID has now confirmed the identities of five.
