Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Wednesday demolished several illegal structures, including a two-storey building, in Katasur in the city's Mohammadpur area.
A portion of a three-storey building and five tin-roofed structures were also pulled down during the drive to recover Haikkar Canal.
Zonal Executive Officer of DNCC (Zone-5) Mohammad Saiful Islam, DNCC Estate Officer Farzana Khanom and Executive Magistrate Shahidul Islam led the drive while DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz was also present on the occasion, said a DNCC statement.
Before starting the drive, Mr Azaz warned against illegal establishments while exchanging views with the media.
He said Dhaka's canals, reservoirs, and public spaces have illegally been occupied by constructing religious institutions, political organisations, and even clubs named after Bangabandhu. Those who are still occupying the city's canals, water bodies and public spaces will not be spared, he warned.
Mr Azaz also urged all concerned to remove their illegal structures on their own, taking lessons from the eviction drive on the bank of Haikkar Canal. "We won't issue any prior notice to illegal occupiers. Eviction drives will be carried out without any notice," he said.
The DNCC will excavate Haikkar Canal and connect it with the nearby Lautola Canal for the sake of quick discharge of rainwater, he said. Responding to a query, he said drives have also been launched to free Mirpur-10 and Farmgate area from hawkers and battery-powered vehicles.
