As the monsoon approaches, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is planning the integrated use of different insecticides to tackle dengue outbreaks.

DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said on Monday that decisions will be made “based on these results”.

He also stressed the need for a public awareness campaign to strengthen community participation in mosquito control.

The remarks came during a meeting of DNCC’s technical committee on mosquito control, held at the corporation’s main office to review ongoing dengue efforts and plan future measures.

According to the DNCC, the meeting focused on selecting new and more effective insecticides as the main agenda.

Prof Md Rashedul Islam, vice-chancellor of Kurigram Agricultural University, said: “Dengue cases are likely to rise in the coming monsoon. Larviciding currently uses temephos, but resistance has emerged in countries like Brazil and the Philippines.

“Incorrect dosage or application can accelerate resistance.”

He recommended testing insecticides at at least five different sites before deciding on next steps.

Entomologist Prof Kabirul Bashar added that semi-field, field, and lab tests of novalion, malathion, and temephos showed malathion to be most effective.

He suggested considering Bti as an alternative.

He also cautioned that fogging often yields limited results and its reliance should be gradually reduced.
