Doctors across the country have announced a shutdown of all public and private hospitals after intern doctors were beaten at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

They made the announcement around 12:30 pm demanding justice and heightened security in the wake of violent attacks on medical staff.

A doctor at DMCH said, “Initially, the intern doctors called a strike. Later, other doctors also expressed their solidarity.”

Nurses have also shown solidarity with the doctors, according to the media reports.

A briefing on the situation is scheduled to be held after 2:00 pm today.

A student from a private university was admitted to the DMCH on Friday night and died there on Saturday morning. The family and loved ones of the patient then beat the intern doctors.

After the incident, the doctors started the work stoppage in the morning.
