Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus on Saturday congratulated the July Girls on receiving a prestigious US award, noting that this recognition is a powerful testament to the extraordinary bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment they demonstrated during the student-led movement in July-August 2024.

"On behalf of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, I extend my deepest congratulations to you all for being recognized with the prestigious 2025 United States Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award," he said in a message to the Resilient and Courageous July Konnya (July Girls/Women).

This year, women student protest leaders of Bangladesh from the July uprising will be recognized with the Madeleine Albright Honorary (IWOC) Group Award.

Dr Yunus said their actions during that critical time exemplify the true meaning of courage.

"As leaders of the protest movement, you stood not only as symbols of resistance but as embodiments of hope for a nation in turmoil," he said.

"As the award states, with unflinching resolve, you confronted violent repression, stood between security forces and your male counterparts, and found innovative ways to continue the fight for justice, even amidst the severe challenges of a complete internet shutdown," said the Chief Adviser.

He said their strength, resilience, and determination continue to inspire countless individuals and communities, both within Bangladesh and globally.

"Your selfless efforts are a reminder to all of us that the pursuit of justice is never easy, but it is always worthwhile," Dr Yunus said.

"You have shown the world what true leadership and sacrifice look like, and through your courage, you have paved the way for a brighter and more just future for Bangladesh," he mentioned.

Dr Yunus said they are incredibly proud of each of them, and this recognition is a well-deserved honour that reflects their unwavering spirit.

"The Interim Government stands with you, and together, we will continue to work toward the ideals of democracy, justice, and freedom that you so valiantly defended. We look forward to you being front and center as Bangladesh moves ahead," Dr Yunus said.

He congratulated them on this extraordinary achievement. "You have made all of Bangladesh proud."

“Women Student Protest Leaders of Bangladesh”

A valiant group of women were key drivers in the student protest movement against violent repression in Bangladesh in July-August 2024, said the US Department of State.

They demonstrated extraordinary bravery, including standing between security forces and male protestors in spite of threats and violence.

When their male counterparts were arrested, these women found innovative ways to continue communication and lead the protests, defying censorship efforts, even during the complete shutdown of the internet.

The bravery and selflessness of these women amid uncertainty was the very definition of courage, said the US government.

On Tuesday (April 1), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and First Lady Melania Trump will host the annual International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awards ceremony at the Department of State.

Now in its 19th year, the Secretary of State’s IWOC Award recognizes women from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength, and leadership – often at great personal risk and sacrifice.

Since 2007, the Department of State has recognized more than 200 women from over 90 countries with the IWOC Award.

US diplomatic missions overseas nominate one woman of courage from their respective host countries, and finalists are selected and approved by senior Department officials.

Following the IWOC ceremony, the awardees will participate in an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and additional programming in Los Angeles.
