The authorities of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) demolished on Thursday a number of illegally built structures at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
The demolition drive was carried out in the morning near the gate adjacent to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University, under the supervision of DSCC Executive Magistrate Md Aminul Islam.
"This is a national park. A large number of people, both men and women, come here to visit. Our operation aims to ensure that everyone can move around here safely and without disturbance. We have removed all illegal structures from the area," he told the media.
Sources at the DSCC estate department said that several hundred illegal structures, including shops, inside Suhrawardy Udyan have been demolished. Among them, four large structures were bulldozed.
The DSCC's eviction operation follows the recent murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, who was fatally stabbed by miscreants inside Suhrawardy Udyan late Tuesday night.
