The central mosque of Dhaka University is set to be rebuilt with financial support from Turkey's largest private aid organisation, IDDEF.
The new mosque complex will feature modern facilities along with opportunities for education and research, according to a press release issued by the Public Relations Office on Friday.
The release stated that IDDEF's International Coordinator, Salahuddin Ceylan, met with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan to discuss different aspects of the mosque complex construction on Friday.
It also mentioned that a digital survey and final design work for the central mosque complex are already underway. Once a memorandum of understanding is signed between Dhaka University and IDDEF, construction is expected to begin soon.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan said, "Reconstruction of the central mosque has long been our demand. With the establishment of this modern mosque complex, a long-awaited expectation of our teachers, students, and the wider university family will finally be fulfilled." He expressed gratitude to IDDEF for extending support in this initiative.
The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) for their assistance in renovating the university's medical centre.
Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury briefed the meeting on the proposed design and facilities of the new mosque complex.
Recently, Dhaka University and TIKA signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at upgrading healthcare services at the university's medical centre. With TIKA's financial support, renovation work of the Shaheed Buddhijibi Dr Mohammad Mortuza Medical Centre is already underway.
TIKA will also provide advanced medical equipment to improve diagnostic and therapeutic services at the centre. To strengthen scientific research, the organisation will install an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) at the university's science laboratory. In addition, TIKA will supply a modern ambulance to enhance emergency medical care and patient transport facilities.
