A clash broke out between the students of Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka College in front of a residential hall over setting up of a tea stall in the early hours of Monday.
The clash erupted around 1:30 am following an argument in which DU students at the Shahnewaz Hall opposed Dhaka College students' attempts to set up the tea stall on the pavement in front of their hall, according to eye-witnesses.
The incident quickly spread on social media, prompting more students from both institutions to join, escalating it into a full-blown clash.
Both sides threw brick-chips and stones at each other, disrupting traffic near Nilkhet intersection and reportedly injuring several students.
Police arrived immediately and tried to bring the situation under control.
Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Vice President (VP) Shadik Kayem and several student leaders reached the spot and attempted to mediate between the groups. Teachers from Dhaka College also urged their students to step back. Eventually, both sides dispersed, restoring calm in the area.
The situation was brought under control around 3:30 am.
New Market Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohammad Jahangir said, "The situation was brought under control and both groups were dispersed," he said.
Officer-in-Charge of New Market Police Station said additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent further unrest.
