Dhaka University observed 'Black Day' on Saturday (August 23) with a discussion meeting, presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.
In his speech, Niaz Ahmed Khan said Dhaka University is a national institution that has traditionally raised its voice against all types of injustice.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed and Treasurer Prof Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury were also present at the event held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium.
"When the university speaks out in protest, it resonates across the entire country. This reflects the people's deep trust in Dhaka University as a truly national institution," Dr Niaz Ahmed remarked.
Recalling the events of August 23, 2007, the Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to all those who participated in the movement at that time.
"In upholding the distinct identity and dignity of Dhaka University, we have always remained united beyond political or ideological divides. This tradition of unity is our shared responsibility. If similar situations arise in the future, we will once again face them together," he commented.
Emphasising respect for state institutions, he said, "The army and police are important national bodies. They are not our opponents. With mutual respects, we must all work from our respective positions for the betterment of the country."
On August 20, 2007, during a football match at Dhaka University's central playground, a clash broke out between students and army personnel. When students and teachers were assaulted by army members, tensions escalated. The next day, following strong protests, the army was forced to withdraw its camp from the university's Physical Education Centre.
As the protests spread beyond Dhaka on August 22, curfews were imposed in major cities, and residential students were ordered to leave the halls.
On the night of August 23, several teachers including Professors Anwar Hossain and Harun-or-Rashid and student leaders were arrested. However, under pressure from the ongoing movement, the government was eventually compelled to release them. Since then, August 23 has been observed every year by the Dhaka University family as Black Day.
Meanwhile, DU VC Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan claimed that his remarks regarding the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election were misquoted in news reports of several media outlets.
Speaking to reporters after the DU Black Day event at the TSC auditorium, the VC made the statement.
Some reports claimed that the VC threatened to resign if obstacles arise.
The VC said, "This is completely misleading. I never said such a thing. What I said is that if we face any obstruction in the process, we will inform everyone and provide updates accordingly."
He described DUCSU as a "sacred trust," adding, "As long as I can, I will carry out this responsibility with everyone's cooperation. So far, we are receiving full support."
Although DUCSU was not part of his prepared remarks at the event, journalists asked him separately about the issue.
In response, the VC expressed satisfaction with the current environment and the cooperation of student organisations.
He further noted, "Organising DUCSU is undoubtedly a challenge, but we are working constantly to create the best possible environment. We have been engaging with all groups concerned for months. A perfectly smooth environment is always relative, but we are striving to address every concern."
