A special seminar, titled 'Let's Abandon the Use of Plastic, Build a Green Campus Free of Pollution and Plastic', was held at Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The seminar took place at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building. It was jointly organised by the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Law, Environment Union, and Green Future Foundation.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan attended the event as the chief guest. Among other distinguished attendees were Prof. Sayema Haque Bidisha, DU Pro-VC (Administration), and Dr. M Jasim Uddin, Director of Arboriculture Centre.
Prof Dr Abdus Salam, Dean of the Faculty of Science, presented a keynote paper, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic and offering potential solutions to the problem.
In his speech, Prof. Niaz Ahmed Khan emphasised the close connection between environment and human survival. "We all have a responsibility to protect biodiversity, nature, and environment," he said.
He also noted that Dhaka University has intensified its efforts towards ensuring environmental sustainability through initiatives like tree plantation and discouraging the use of plastic. Moreover, research and academic activities on environmental issues are being actively carried out in various departments and institutes of DU.
After the seminar, teachers and students held a rally from the Senate Building to Mal Chattar with planting some saplings.
