DU Mourning Day observed

Dhaka University authorities on Monday observed the Mourning Day through various programmes, commemorating the tragic deaths of students and guests in a building collapse at the university's Jagannath Hall 33 years ago.

On this day in 1985, the roof of the dilapidated building of the dormitory's TV room caved in, leaving 40 people, including 26 students and 14 guests, dead and 300 others injured.

Teachers, students, officials and employees of the university, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, brought out a mourning procession from the Aparajeya Banglaandplaced wreaths at October Smriti Stambha at Jagannath Hall in the morning, reports UNB.

Later, a discussion was held at the October Memorial Building at 8am.

The DU vice-chancellor, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Mohammad Samad, Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, DU Teachers' Association President Prof ASM Prof Maksud Kamal and hall Provost Prof Asim Sarker were, among others, present at the programme.

A blood donation programme was also arranged on the Jagannath Hall premises while a painting exhibition held at the dormitory.
