The High Court on Monday granted ad-interim bail for six months to Dhaka University Professor Hafizur Rahman Karzon in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The HC bench of Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja and Justice Rezaul Karim passed the order, UNB reports.

The DU Professor filed a petition with the High Court on Sunday seeking his bail in the case.

Advocate Sheikh Ali Ahmed Khokon stood for Hafizur while deputy attorney general Sultana Akter Rubi represented the state.

There is no bar to release DU Prof. Hafizur, said Advocate Sheikh Ali.

Earlier on November 10, the Appellate Division upheld the High Court order that had granted bail to former minister Abdul Latif Siddique and journalist Manjurul Alam in the same case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Police arrested Prof Hafizur and several others after tensions broke out during an event organised by ‘Manch 71’, a platform of freedom fighters, in the capital on August 28.

Prof. Hafizur was the organiser of the programme.

A group of youths identifying themselves as ‘July Fighters’ handed them over to police around noon, alleging that they had attempted to create chaos at the event held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

‘Manch 71’organised a roundtable titled “Our Great Liberation War and the Constitution of Bangladesh” which was attended by freedom fighters, lawyers, writers, journalists, teachers, and former bureaucrats.

Later, Sub-Inspector Amirul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station filed a case against 16 people under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
