A student of Dhaka University (DU) allegedly committed suicide by jumping off of a dormitory early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Sanju Baraik, a resident of Jagannath Hall and a student of the Anthropology Department of the 2020-2021 session. He hailed from Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district.

Hall Provost Debashish Pal said that the student entered the hall through the east gate at 4:01 am and took the lift of Rabindra Bhavan to go to the roof of the building.

At 5:30 am, he jumped towards the road on the west side of the building near the pond, he said after seeing the CCTV footage, reports UNB.

The hall's guards took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where physicians declared him dead upon arrival, he said.

Quoting roommates, the provost said Sanju was a little upset in the last few days over a love affair and was not saying at the hall in the last two days.

Officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station Khalid Munsur said that initially it appears that he committed suicide, and the detailed reasons will be known after investigation.

He said they were scrutinising the CCTV footage

According to his roommates, before committing suicide, he took his Facebook account to write, “I have realised my mistakes, I have disturbed someone day after day, and it was completely wrong of me to blame others. I apologise to everyone. If my actions have caused any harm to anyone, that responsibility is entirely mine, and I am asking for forgiveness.”
