A final-year DU student committed suicide at his home in Manikganj, reportedly from guilt and fear of societal attack on his family honour, following a controversial Facebook status he posted related to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) months ago.

The deceased has been identified as Shakil Ahmed, 24, a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University (DU).

Police recovered his body on Tuesday from his residence in Dokkhin Jamsha village.

According to his classmates and friends, Shakil had posted the controversial status about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) around eight months ago, which he later deleted, admitting his mistake.

Recently, the comment resurfaced on Facebook, leading to a wave of online and offline threats against him. Under intense mental pressure, he took his own life by hanging at around 2:00 am on Monday.

Before his death, Shakil posted another Facebook status explaining the reasons behind his decision. In the note, he also apologised again and stated that no one should be held responsible for his death.

Toufiq Azam, officer-in-charge of Singair Police Station, said, "The body was recovered from the house early Tuesday. It has been sent to the morgue at Manikganj Medical College Hospital for post-mortem."
