The 'Shorot Utsob' (Autumn Festival) at the Faculty of Fine Arts (Charukala) of Dhaka University (DU) has been postponed following allegations that one of the organisers has 'links to fascism'.
The decision was announced on Friday in a statement, signed by Professor Dr. Md. Azharul Islam, Dean of the Faculty.
According to the statement, the cultural group 'Satyen Sen Shilpigoshthi' has been organising the festival under the Bakultala of Charukala for the past 19 years. This year, the group applied to hold the event on October 10, and the authority approved the request as usual.
However, on October 9, an application was submitted to the faculty by a group called 'Anti-Fascist Writers, Journalists, and Artists' Forum', alleging that one of the organisers of this year's event has connections with fascism.
In light of this complaint, the Faculty of Fine Arts contacted 'Satyen Sen Shilpigoshthi' and decided to postpone the festival temporarily to avoid any "undesirable situation".
The DU statement further said a meeting between the faculty members and the representatives of Satyen Sen Shilpigoshthi would be held today (Saturday) to review the allegation as well as decide on a future date for the event after examining the matter.
