Dhaka University Teachers Network on Sunday placed a 10-point demand before the election commission of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) in light of the evolving situation surrounding the election, set to be held on September 9.
At a press conference held at Madhur Canteen, leaders of the organisation announced the demands, stressing the need for a transparent and credible election.
They recalled that in the 2019 DUCSU election, the Teachers' Network independently monitored the polls and reported several irregularities.
Since the beginning of this year's process, they said, the group has been offering various proposals to the university administration in the interest of a fair election.
The leaders also pointed out that on September 2 they had announced a 13-point set of proposals along with a plan for independent monitoring. While some of those recommendations were accepted, many key issues remain unaddressed.
The 10 demands announced by the Teachers' Network include ensuring stronger security inside polling centers without closing entrances and making the identities of security staff visible; assigning female teachers to verify female voters; guaranteeing transparency in the appointment of polling officers; extending voting hours until 5 PM; allowing polling agents to remain inside the centers during voting; publishing clear guidelines for journalists and polling agents; appointing teachers and administrative staff to manage queues outside booths; taking swift action against any attempt to spread rumors or fear; arranging designated rest areas for observers and agents; and holding the administration accountable if the election process lacks transparency.
