The long-pending election to the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) and its hall unions will be held on March 11.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman announced the date following several meetings on Wednesday, report UNB and bdnews24.com.

According to a press release, the university students will be able to cast their votes from 8 am to 2 pm on the day.

The university authorities held several meetings with its hall provosts and DUCSU election advisory panel on Wednesday over holding the overdue polls.

DUCSU was formed a year after Dhaka University was established in 1921. Dhaka University’s student leaders were at the forefront of the Language Movement in 1952 and the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

Though DUCSU elections are to be held every year, there have only been six since independence.

The last election was held on Jun 6, 1990. Though efforts were made several times, no election has been organised since then.

On January 17 of this year, the High Court settled a six-year-old rule on the issue, ordering DUCSU elections to be held within six months.
