Leaders of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) have held a gayebana janaza (funeral prayer in absentia) for Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following his death.
The prayer took place at the VC Chattar on the Dhaka University campus around 10:40 pm on Sunday. DUCSU Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem led the prayers.
Students began gathering at the venue from 10:00pm. During the programme and they chanted various slogans, expressing solidarity with Iran and voicing opposition to what they described as 'US imperialism.'
Following the prayer, DU students brought out a protest procession. The march paraded through the university's residential hall area and concluded at the Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC, where they held a brief rally.
Addressing the rally, Shadik Kayem said oppression and persecution of Muslims around the world continue largely because of divisions within the Muslim community. He urged youths and leaders in Muslim-majority countries, including Bangladesh, to unite.
"We believe that from Dhaka, the leadership we provide can contribute to the future liberation of Palestine. The oppressed people of Kashmir will achieve freedom, Uyghur Muslims will be free, those facing persecution in Rakhine will be liberated, and the people of Iran will obtain justice," he said.
Despite ideological differences, it is crucial to raise voices against injustice, oppression and imperialism, he added.
"If we remain silent, similar aggression could one day be directed at our own country and our people," he warned.
