Independent Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice-president candidate Jalal Ahmed, also known as “Jwalamoyi Jalal” has been expelled from his residence hall on charges of assaulting his roommate and handed over to police by university authorities.

This has given rise to questions about his participation in the upcoming student union polls.

The initial incident took place at around 12:30 am on Wednesday in room No. 462 of the university's Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall, bdnews24.com reports.

Jalal's roommate Md Rabiul Haque was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) afterwards.

Speaking from DMCH, Rabiul told reporters that Jalal had struck him with a tube light, causing deep cuts to his chest.

Following the incident, Jalal locked himself inside his room for some time. The hall's principal, proctorial team members, and students gathered outside his room.

Jalal was eventually handed over to the police around 4:00 am.

Khalid Mansur, chief of Shahbagh Police Station, said at around 10:00 am: "We brought him to the police station. He has been charged with assaulting and stabbing another person. He is now in police custody, and the process of filing a case against him is under way."

Students had held protests to demand Jalal’s expulsion and arrest. Hall Principal Sirajul Islam then announced his expulsion from the hall, saying that necessary measures will also be taken by the hall authorities to expel him from the university.

This has cast doubt on his ability to contest the DUCSU election.
