Economic downturn hits working women hardest in Bangladesh

The tough economy is hurting women disproportionately in Bangladesh, witnessing an alarming decline in the first half of the current fiscal year.

Between July and December of the current fiscal year, around 1.8 million women in Bangladesh lost their jobs, accounting for approximately 85 per cent of the total net job losses during this period, which stood at 2.1 million.

During the October to December quarter, the number of job losses among female workers in Bangladesh reached 2.0 million.

Moreover, overseas employment for women has dropped by half over the past two years.

Towfiqul Islam Khan, Senior Research Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), revealed the alarming data in his presentation today at a consultation organised by UN Women Bangladesh.

“There is no sectoral data for employment. Surely, the Ministry of Finance is considering employment as a priority for preparing the budget,” he said.

He finds it difficult to solve the problem through adequate attention in the electoral debates, instead of a piecemeal approach.
