Eight personalities to receive Independence Award this year

Eight renowned personalities are likely to receive the ‘Independence Award 2025’ for their glorious and remarkable contributions at the national level.

The Cabinet Division will soon issue a notification regarding the final list of nominees for the highest state honour, according to sources.

The recipients under consideration for the award include the Commander-in-Chief of the Liberation War General MAG Osmani (posthumous), poet Al Mahmud (posthumous), sculptor Novera Ahmed (posthumous), who was one of the key designers of the Central Shaheed Minar, pop legend Azam Khan (posthumous), researcher, writer, and intellectual Badruddin Umar, Scientist Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam (posthumous), BRAC founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed (posthumous), and BUET student Abrar Fahad (posthumous), who was killed due to torture by members of the now-banned Chhatra League in October 2019.

The government has been presenting the awards to commemorate Independence Day on Mar 26 since 1977.
