A UK-based expatriate visiting Bangladesh has been murdered at his home in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
The victim, 82-year-old AKM Abdur Rashid, had arrived in the country with his wife in September, reports bdnews24.com.
Rashid was fatally stabbed by suspected robbers on Thursday night in his apartment on the second floor of a five-storey building in Dhanmondi 15.
Neighbours found him severely injured and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared dead around 3:45 am on Friday.
Inspector Md Faruk, head of the DMCH Police Camp, said that Rashid had multiple stab wounds on his chest and face. The body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
Rashid owned the entire building except for one flat on the second floor. He and his wife, Sufira Rashid, both doctors, live in the UK but typically visit Bangladesh each September, staying for a few months at their Dhanmondi residence. The rest of their family also resides abroad.
Saidur Rahman Badhan, a tenant who helped take Rashid to the hospital, said, “They arrived in Bangladesh in September. We were jolted awake by sudden screams late at night. When we entered their room, we found Abdur Rashid lying on the floor, covered in blood, while his wife was pouring water on his head.”
“We initially took him to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi before transferring him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead,” Badhan added.
He suspects that the attackers had come to rob the house. “It seems someone entered from outside. The intruders fled when they heard the neighbours’ commotion.”
Hazaribagh Police Station chief Md Saiful Islam said that CCTV footage captured three suspects. “Around 3am, Rashid was awake and praying, with the balcony door left open. That’s when three individuals climbed up from the lawn in front of the balcony and entered the house.”
“We later saw the three suspects fleeing the scene. We believe they intended to steal. We are currently analysing the footage to identify them,” the officer added.
