A man over the age of 60 has been beaten to death over suspicion of being a “cattle thief” in Chattogram’s Raozan Upazila.

The incident occurred in the Bainna Para area of the Municipal Sadar No. 9 Ward. Police then recovered the body, but have not been able to confirm the deceased’s name or identity.

Nizam Uddin Dewan, inspector of Raozan Police Station, said that the body was recovered from an open field after it was reported to emergency hotline 999.

The man was “beaten to death” at some point in the night, he said.

“There was a barn for cattle next to the field. Some locals say that he was beaten at night because they suspected him of going to steal cattle from the barn. He then died. Some others say he was crazy and that someone beat and killed him overnight.”

The killing is being investigated, police said.
