Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has brushed aside any uncertainty over the national election, reiterating that the voting would take place within the timeframe announced by the chief advisor.
On Thursday, Shafiqul said that the government would ensure an environment conducive to a fair election, while creating a “level playing field” for all.
“It will be a better election than any held in the past,” he said after an event hosted by Comilla University at the BARD Auditorium in Moynamoti.
On the proposed proportional representation (PR) system, the press aide said the issue was under serious discussion. “Political parties and the commissions are discussing the matter sincerely.”
Addressing concerns over recent deteriorating law and order, he said: “Those involved in every sensitive incident are being arrested. No one can claim that anyone responsible has been spared. In almost every case, arrests are being made swiftly.”
Speaking on the deadly violence surrounding the NCP rally in Gopalganj, he said: “People in Gopalganj are citizens of this country. The government will not discriminate against them.
“But those who took the law into their own hands and resorted to violence are being brought under the law. Arrests are under way.”
