Endangered ring-tailed Lemur rescued after theft from Gazipur Safari Park; 1 held

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has rescued an endangered ring-tailed lemur and arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of three lemurs from Gazipur Safari Park.

The arrestee was identified as Md Delwar Hossain Tawseef, 22.

The detectives arrested Delwar Hossain Tawseef on Friday conducting a raid at Darhi Hamipur Akand Bari of Sadar upazila in Zamalpur district.

Based on statement of the arrested suspect, the detectives of the DMP later conducted a drive on Friday night in Dhaka's Shyambazar area and recovered the male ring-tailed lemur in captivity, said Deputy Commissioner (Media) of the DMP Talebur Rahman.

The theft took place between 11:00pm on March 23 and 5:30am on March 24.

A group of thieves cut through the fence of Enclosure " Lamchita Ghar' -01 at the park and stole two male and one female ring-tailed lemurs - a species classified as globally endangered.

A case was filed with Sreepur Police Station in Gazipur soon after the incident.

The Wildlife Crime Control Unit of the Forest Department was informed of the incident. 
 
Efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining two lemurs and arrest the other suspects involved, said the DC (Media) of the DMP.
