Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, former finance minister, foreign minister, and former lawmaker from Dinajpur-4 constituency, passed away at the age of 83 on Thursday.
He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka, family sources confirmed.
Ali had been receiving intensive care for kidney-related complications for the past 13 days.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held tonight in front of his residence in Dhanmondi, followed by burial at Banani Graveyard.
Born on June 2, 1943, in Dinajpur’s Khansama upazila, Ali completed his studies in economics at the University of Dhaka and later joined the same department as a lecturer in 1963.
In 1966, he joined the Pakistan Foreign Service and served as Vice-Consul in New York. He played a significant role in mobilising international support for Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971.
Ali served as foreign minister from 2014 to 2019 and later as finance minister after being elected in the 2024 national polls. His parliamentary position ended following the dissolution of parliament after the 2024 mass uprising.
