Leasing system at Haor region should be scrapped to ensure the rights of its real fishermen and people, and protect the environment as well as biodiversity, speakers said at a roundtable on Monday.

Lack of good governance and proper fisheries management in the areas are hurting the fishermen while excessive fishing, use of current jal (fishing net), insecticides and poison are ruining the eco-system fatally, they said.

Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) and Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) jointly organised the roundtable titled ‘Haor Leasing System and Fisheries Management’ at Jatiay Press Club in the capital.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru was present at the event as the Chief Guest while Poba Chairman Abu Naser Khan chaired the function.

Director (Inland Fisheries) of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) Kazi Shams Afroz and BARCIK coordinator Syed Ali Biswas, among others, were present at the programme.
