Experts at a webinar on Wednesday underscored the need for using compost to maintain the high quality of soil in order for growing healthy plants.

With this, dependence on the use of fertiliser and pesticides may be reduced positively impacting on human health and the environment, they said at the webinar, organised by Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO, marking Global Day of Action titled ‘Home Composting For Zero Waste Community to Go Beyond Recovery!’.

Small gardeners were also part of the webinar, aimed at motivating people to adopt a zero-waste lifestyle and building awareness among the public regarding the benefits of using compost, and shared their views on home composting.

“I am happy to utilise my kitchen waste properly, now I do not need to worry about bad smell from kitchen waste because compost will not spread any smell while composting wastes,” said a participant.

Another participant said, “we can reduce our wastes up to 70 per cent by practicing home composting from organic wastes.”

ESDO Secretary-General Dr Shahriar Hossain and Executive Director Siddika Sultana along with other ESDO team members also attended the webinar.

Ms Sultana said, “We will be able to solve a lot of waste management-related problems if we can turn our wastes into wealth”.

ESDO has been implementing a project named 'Building Zero Waste Communities for a Pollution-Free Environment in Bangladesh' in association with Dhaka North City Corporation, Rangpur City Corporation, Department of Environment, GAIA and PSF.
