Hazrat Ali, deputy director at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), said crops of 14,758 hectares of land in the district have been submerged by floods.

The banana orchards in the char areas have been severely damaged, he said.

Farmers were supposed to harvest paddy and jute in a few days but, with a rapid deterioration in the district’s flood situation, they did not have the opportunity to cut and bring them home, this correspondent came to know while visiting several affected unions in the district.

Initially when floods hit the district, only almonds maize and other Rabi crops affected in the low-lying areas were destroyed.

Meanwhile, jute farmers of the district said they could not cut their crop as it had already been destroyed remaining submerged for so long.

Bakkar Khan, a farmer from Ambikapur area of Sadar upazila, said, ‘Every year there is a loss in the monsoon season, but this time the amount of damage is much higher.

“My 20 bighas of aman, two acres of jute have been under water for the last 20 days. Now there is no hope of harvesting them.”

Hafizur, a farmer from Goldangir area of North Channel UP in Sadar Upazila, said, "I cultivated aman on six bighas of land to meet the rice demand for my family.

“It’s all over now. I don’t know how to live on with my family since floods have now taken away all that we have left after coronavirus stopped our income.”

DAE director Ali said they have sent a list of the affected farmers to the relevant department seeking assistance for them.

Those affected farmers are expected to get assistant from the government, he said.
