Information Advisor Mahfuj Alam’s father Azizur Rahman Bachchu Mollah, a local BNP leader, has been attacked in Lakshmipur’s Ramganj Upazila.
The assault, which took place at the Narayanpur village of Ichhapur Union on Sunday, left him with an injury to his hand.
The assault has sparked protests and raised tensions between rival political factions in the area, reports bdnews24.com.
Following the incident, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement organised a demonstration at the Upazila headquarters around 10:30pm, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.
According to locals, the attack occurred when Azizur, the organising secretary of Ichhapur union BNP, intervened in a confrontation stemming from an earlier assault on the residence of his nephew, Upazila Chhatra League Vice President Mehedi Monju.
Witnesses said a group affiliated with the BNP and its student wing, Chhatra Dal, targeted Monju’s home, prompting Azizur to step in.
In the ensuing altercation, he was assaulted and sustained an injury to his hand.
He was subsequently taken to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment and later discharged to recover at home.
Monju, speaking on the incident, said: “I had returned home in the afternoon to visit my ailing mother. Shortly after, BNP members attacked my house. I had left before they arrived. Later, when Azizur uncle tried to stop the attackers, he was injured.”
A family member confirmed that Azizur was in stable condition and resting at home.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Bashar said, “A confrontation between two groups took place near Azizur’s house. When he attempted to mediate, one side turned against him, leading to his injury. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and later returned home. However, no formal complaint has been lodged.”
Ichhapur Union BNP President Md Aliullah said, “I have heard about the incident but am not currently in the area. This appears to be centred around a Chhatra League leader. Nonetheless, the BNP condemns any form of violence and calls for appropriate action against those responsible.”
