The National Consensus Commission is meeting for its 21st day of the second round of dialogues with political parties in hopes of resolving disagreements on three fundamental issues.
The panel plans to conclude the second phase of the dialogue by July 31 and will send a draft combining the issues agreed upon in the first and second round of dialogue to the parties either on Tuesday or Wednesday, said the commission’s Vice Chairman Ali Riaz, bdnews24.com reports.
“We will combine them and reach the July Charter by the day after tomorrow,” he said.
Riaz’s remarks came at the start of the talks at Dhaka’s Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday.
The agenda for the discussion includes provisions related to the caretaker government, women’s representation in parliament, and the appointments of the auditor general, comptroller, and ombudsman.
Referring to the draft of the July Charter being presented to parties, Riaz said: “We are waiting until tomorrow for their comments. I hope that, by taking into account the various comments, we will be able to deliver the points on which we have reached consensus at the initial stage to the political parties today or tomorrow.”
Stating that the panel wants to conclude the discussions by July 31, he added: "By the 31st of July, we will have to clarify the final form of the charter, at least in favour of all the issues on which we have reached consensus, and include them in the charter."
Regarding the new proposals presented by several parties regarding the caretaker government, Riaz said: "I want to present a proposal before you by combining them. Because each party will have its own statement, we are trying to move forward with the proposals after taking that into consideration."
Monir Haider, special assistant to the chief advisor, moderated the discussion in the presence of panel members Badiul Alam Majumder, Aiyur Mia, Safar Raj Hossain, and retired justices Emdadul Haque and Iftekharruzzaman joined the discussions.
