A major fire has been burning for more three and a half hours at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, officials say.

The blaze began around 2:30pm on Saturday. Firefighters arrived soon after being alerted. As the flames spread, more units joined the operation.

By 6pm, the fire was still burning despite hours of effort to control it.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, 37 units from 13 different stations have been deployed. The cargo village is a key facility where imported goods are stored before clearance and delivery.

The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate said firefighting teams from the army and air force are assisting.

Navy personnel and two platoons from the Border Guard Bangladesh have also joined the effort, it added.

The cargo village lies between the airport post office and the hangar area, near Gate 8 -- known locally as the Hangar Gate.

Officials said the fire started at the northern side of the import cargo complex, near Gate 3.

No casualties have been reported so far.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The extent of the damage is not yet known, but importers fear they may face significant financial losses.
