Five individuals have so far been arrested for their suspected involvement in the killing of scrap trader Sohag near Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka on July 9.
Two of the arrestees, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, named as the prime suspect, and Tarek Rahman Robin, 22, were taken on remand for different durations in two separate cases — one for murder and one under the Arms Act — filed with Kotwali Police Station.
In the latest drive in the Zindabahar area under Kotwali Police Station, the police arrested another accused in the case, Md Titon Gazi, 33, around 1:00 am on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrests to BSS news agency, saying that they have so far arrested three crime suspects, while the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) captured two others.
Police arrested Mohin, Robin, and Titon Gazi, while the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Alamgir, 28, and Monir, 32.
Earlier, on July 9, scrap metal trader Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, 39, was hacked, beaten, and stoned to death near a gate of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital.
Sohag, the victim, son of Yusuf Ali Hawlader, was a resident of Purbo Namabari village in Keraniganj. He had been running a scrap business in Rani Ghosh Lane of Old Dhaka for many years.
Two Jubo Dal leaders were expelled over the trader's murder near Mitford.
Two separate cases — one for murder and another under the Arms Act — have been filed with Kotwali Police Station.
