Five more NBR officials under ACC scanners

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched investigations into five more officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) over allegations of corruption and irregularities.

The officials currently under investigation are Abdul Rashid Miah, Additional Commissioner, Large Taxpayers Unit (VAT); Lutfur Azim, Member; Md Alamgir Hossain, former Additional Director General, Central Intelligence Cell (CIC); Md Shihabul Islam, Deputy Tax Commissioner, Tax Zone-16, Dhaka; and Md Tarek Hasan, Joint Commissioner.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the ACC alleged that some dishonest NBR officials facilitated tax evasion by accepting substantial bribes from business entities, causing significant annual revenue losses to the government.

The statement also revealed that taxpayers who made advance or excess payments routinely faced delays and were pressured to pay bribes - often amounting to half of their refund -to reclaim their dues.

In cases where officials did not receive the expected bribes, they allegedly filed baseless tax evasion cases to harass businesses, it added.

On June 29, the anti-graft watchdog launched investigation against six officials most of whom were at the forefront of the protest by the revenue-board staff.
