Low-lying areas of Netrakona and Sunamganj have been inundated as the ongoing flood situation in both the districts may deteriorate slightly in the next 24 hours until Tuesday, officials said on Monday.
Apart from this, the low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts have also been inundated as short-term flood situation was prevailing there.
Partho Protim Barua, Assistant Engineer, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWD), Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), told the FE that the flood situation may improve from Wednesday.
The 24-hour bulletin starting from Monday morning said except Kushiyara, Manu-Khowai, major rivers in the North-Eastern region of the country are in rising trend.
As a result, the ongoing flood situation in the Sunamganj and Netrokona districts may deteriorate slightly in the next 24 hours, it said.
The Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in steady state, while the Ganges-Padma rivers are in rising trend, it said, adding that these rivers may rise in next 48 hours.
Citing some weather forecasting agencies, it said chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the North-Eastern and adjoining upstream region of the country is unlikely.
As a result, the ongoing flood situation may improve afterwards.
Due to the chance of heavy rainfall in the adjoining upstream, the Teesta, the Dharala and the Dudhkumar rivers in the Northern region may rise rapidly at times in the next 48 hours, according to the bulletin.
Teesta water may cross the danger level at Dalia point in the next 24 hours causing short term flood situation in the low-lying areas of Lalmonoirhat and Nilphamari district, it added.
Of the 109 monitored water level station, 73 are rising while 35 are declining.
Three rivers are now above danger level, the bulletin further said.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said it recorded the highest 241 millimetre (mm) rainfall in Sylhet on Monday.
Dhaka witnessed 3.0 mm rainfall, the BMD in its 24-hour bulletin starting from Monday evening stated.
