Flood situation worsens amid heavy rain

Flood situation turned severe in parts of the country on Saturday amid heavy rain and downstream flow from neighbouring India.

The condition deteriorated further in 19 districts and another seven districts are going to be marooned in the next three days, according to the flood forecasting and warning centre (FFWC) under the Water Development Board (BWDB).

The water level has been rising in all major basins, including the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, the Padma-Ganges, the Suroma and the Upper Meghna, and might continue for the next three days, said FFWC.

Fresh areas in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Bogura, Natore, Sirajganj, Tangail, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Sunamganj, Sylhet and Netrakona districts were flooded on Saturday inundating both households and crop fields.

The highest rainfall of 252 mm was recorded at Laurer Garh in Sunamganj district from Friday 9:00am until Saturday 9:00am, according to the Met Office, which forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall in many parts of the country in the next twenty-four hours.
