Food production in Mymensingh region 2.5 times more than demand

The Mymensingh region's food production in the 2023-24 financial year was 44 lakh 88 thousand 950 metric tons. Food demand against production is only 18 lakh 7 thousand 233 metric tons. The current financial year has about 26 lakh 81 thousand 717 metric tons of food surplus.

This information was given in the workshop titled 'Crop production situation of Mymensingh region and action plan for the financial year 2024-25' organised by the office of the Additional Director, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).

The workshop was held on Monday (11 March) at 11:30 a.m. in the Syed Nazrul Islam Conference Hall of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). Deputy Director of Office of Additional Director of DAE, Salma Akhter, gave a welcome speech. 

A video documentary of various agricultural development activities were shown in Manikganj. Project Director Mohammad Ziaur Rahman presented the 'Greater Mymensingh Region Crop Intensification Project'. The progress of the four districts of Mymensingh, Netrakona, Jamalpur and Sherpur, different activities, the production picture of Boro, Aman and Aush rice in the last 5 years and the action plan were presented.

Director General of DAE Badal Chandra Biswas attended the Zoom meeting as chief guest in the workshop presided over by the Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Mymensingh Region Abu Mo Enayet Ullah. 

The former vice chancellor of BAU and member of the expert pool of the Ministry of Agriculture, Prof. Dr M A Sattar Mandal, was present as the guest of honour. 

The special guests were the Director General of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir, Director of the Plant Conservation Wing of DAE, Md Ashraf Uddin, Director General of Bangladesh Atomic Agriculture Research Institute (BINA), Dr Mirza Mofazzal Islam.

Mohammad Ziaur Rahman said about the success of the project, in the financial year 2023-24, the average crop intensity has increased by 1.52 per cent, the amount of cultivable land has increased to 4949 hectares, the cultivation of Aush has increased to 4066 hectares, the cultivation of spices has increased to 1146 hectares, women empowerment has risen by 30 to 32 per cent and the use of technology developed from nurse-systems increased by two per cent.
