A former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader’s car has been shot at while he was returning home after campaigning for the Sheaf of Paddy symbol in Narayanganj.

The incident took place around 7:40pm on Sunday on the road next to Araihazar Bazar, said Araihazar Police chief Md Alauddin.

He said the target of the attack was Amir Hossain, former president of Mahmudpur union Chhatra Dal, who is now a businessman.

At the time of the attack, Amir was driving his car. His friend Sadequr Rahman, senior joint general secretary of the union Jubo Dal, was sitting beside him.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Sadequr said they had campaigned throughout the day in Mahmudpur.

After finishing the campaign, they stopped at Araihazar Bazar to repair the car’s TV monitor.

“After fixing the monitor, while we were on our way home, two young men on a motorcycle opened fire at our car while it was moving on the Gopaldi-Mahmudpur bypass road, about half a kilometre from Araihazar Police Station,” he said.

“Fortunately, since the car was moving, the bullets did not hit us.”

He said an Army vehicle passed through the area within a minute of the attack, but they were too frightened to get out of the car.

After the incident, with help from party activists nearby, they took the damaged car to the police station, Sadequr added.

He also said both attackers appeared to be under 30 years old and neither was wearing a helmet.

Officer Alauddin said police have received complaints of the attack and shooting.

“Police have been sent to the spot. Legal action will be taken after a detailed investigation,” he said.
