Former Jagannath University professor Anwara gets bail in July Uprising case

Former Jagannath University professor SM Anwara Begum has secured bail in a case filed over an alleged attempted murder during the July Uprising.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman granted her bail on a bond of Tk 500, according to Kaiyum Hossain Nayan, assistant public prosecutor of the court.

Anwara, formerly a faculty member of the Political Science Department at Jagannath University, was arrested on the evening of May 28 from outside the university premises.

She was formally shown arrested in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of Sujon Molla, general secretary of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal, during the July Uprising. She was sent to jail the following day.

According to the case documents, on July 19, during the protests, members of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal held a demonstration in front of Star Hotel, opposite the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dhaka.

The case file alleged that they were deliberately attacked, beaten, and fired upon.

During the incident, Sujon Molla sustained a gunshot injury to his eye and underwent long-term medical treatment.

Anwara was listed as accused no. 43 in the case.
