A former Jubo Dal leader, who was arrested in an operation in Jashore’s Keshabpur by joint forces, has died.

The dead has been identified as Ujjal Bishwash.

“Ujjal was sent to the hospital after he had fallen sick in the prison on Friday night. He was declared dead at the hospital,” said Abid Ahammed, jailer, Jashore Prison.

Ujjal had been expelled from his party following the ouster of the Awami League on Aug 5. Ujjal was the joint convenor of his party’s local chapter in Keshabpur municipality.

He died a day after he had been arrested by the joint forces on Thursday night. Ujjal was arrested along with three others with illegal firearms, bullets, and drugs.

They were sent to the prison after arrest.

Jailer Abid said they received Ujjal at 9:30pm on Friday. Ujjal was sick when he was brought to the prison with documents describing him as a victim of “mob beating”.

“He was bleeding internally, though he answered correctly the questions asked during his entry to the prison,” said Abid.

He was admitted to the prison hospital, from where he was admitted to the Jashore General Hospital as his condition kept deteriorating.

Ujjal’s body bore blunt injuries and he was bleeding internally, said Jobayer Hossain, a doctor at the Jashore hospital.

He was brought dead to the hospital, the physician said.

Keshabpur Police chief Borhan Uddin said Ujjal was sick when joint forces handed him over to police. Ullaj was first taken to the Upazila Health Complex before being taken to the police station, he said.

“Ujjal was beaten to death by security forces,” said Jobayer Hossain, the victim’s brother.

He said his brother had never been a victim of “mob beating”.
