The Rapid Action battalion has arrested Shirhan Sharif Tamal, son of former land minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu with a firearm in Pabna’s Ishwardi.
He was arrested following a raid in Alobagh on Friday morning, said Major Ehteshamul Haque Khan, company commander of RAB-12.
The elite force seized a foreign pistol, ammunition, four bullets, 10 yaba pills and a private car from him.
Tamal was the president of the Ishwardi Upazila Jubo League. His father, Awami League leader Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu, was elected as the MP from the Pabna-4 constituency five times.
After Dilu died in 2020, another of his sons, Galibur Rahman Sharif, became the MP of the same constituency.
Tamal has also been named in a case over an attack on students during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. He went into hiding after the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5.
Company Commander Major Ehteshamul Haque Khan said they arrested Tamal after being tipped off. He was later handed over to the Ishwardi Police Station on Friday.
The RAB has filed a case with the police station, said OC Rafiqul Islam of Ishwardi Police Station. He has been sent to a jail in Pabna.
