Golam Maula Rony, former MP for Patuakhali-3, has been attacked on the Dhaka University campus, police say.

Rony was inside the car when the assault was made around 11 am on Tuesday.

Mostajirur Rahman, the chief of Shahbagh Police Station, said in the evening that a complaint regarding the incident near the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science had been filed.

Legal actions were underway, he added.

Roni described the attack in a Facebook post. “As my car was driving past the opposite side of the nutrition science department, after crossing the Dhaka University metro station, about 4-5 youths armed with hammers and firearms launched an attack on my car.

“They smashed the windows with hammers. The driver, initially shocked, braked abruptly and then swiftly drove off to evade the attackers, who chased after us, shouting obscenities,” Roni said.

He added that he had notified law enforcement and Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain about the incident.

On Facebook, he expressed a sense of relief for surviving the ordeal.

Rony provided his office and home addresses, as well as details about his whereabouts, writing that he was making his whereabouts known to ease any future attempts on his life.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, Roni claimed the attack was pre-planned and that the attackers had been trailing him for some time.

He added that two of the attackers who vandalised the car were young, while the three individuals standing at the back were older.

When asked if any student organisation or group was involved in the attack, Roni stated that he did not suspect anyone in particular.
