Former police superintendent Babul Akter has been released on bail after nearly three years and seven months in jail in connection with the murder of his wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
He was freed around 5:45 pm on Wednesday, leaving Chattogram Central Jail in a silver-coloured private car under police escort.
The former police officer did not speak to anyone during his departure.
Babul’s current wife, Israt Jahan Mukta, along with other family members, were present at the jail during his release, bdnews24.com reports.
His lawyer, Kafil Uddin Chowdhury, said that after the High Court granted bail to Babul, his former father-in-law, Mosharraf Hossain, filed a petition seeking to stay the bail order.
However, the Chamber Judge Court rejected the appeal on Wednesday, clearing the way for Babul’s release.
“The court ordered Babul's bail on the condition of his regular appearance in future hearings. After the release order was sent to the jail, he was set free,” the lawyer said.
Kafil explained that the High Court had granted bail, and the lower court issued the release order.
He added that the law does not allow anyone to be detained without a valid court stay order.
