Four die as launches collide on Meghna River amid dense fog

Four people have been killed in a head-on collision between two passenger launches on the Meghna River in Chandpur amid dense fog.

The collision occurred around 2:00 am on Thursday in the Harinaghat area of Chandpur Sadar Upazila, according to BIWTA Chandpur Port Officer Babu Lal Baidya.

Dhaka District Superintendent of River Police Abdullah Al Mamun said the bodies of one woman and three men had been recovered.

“Many others were rescued with injuries and have been taken to the hospital,” he said.

The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed, according to a bdnews24.com report.

BIWTA Chandpur Port Officer Babu Lal Baidya said the launches involved, MV Zakir Samrat-3 and MV Adventure-9, were operating on the Barishal–Bhola to Dhaka route. He added that one of the vessels continued towards Dhaka after the collision.

Two people were critically injured in the crash, according to him. One them died at the scene and another passed away while being taken to Dhaka for treatment.

The damaged launches and the bodies of two victims are currently at Dhaka's Sadarghat in Dhaka, Baidya said.
