A fire has swept through four warehouses storing jute sacks in Khulna city.

The fire broke out around 10:30 pm on Thursday in the Kadamtala area adjacent to the Boro Bazar Railway Station, said Khulna Fire Service and Civil Defence Assistant Director Faruk Hossain Sikdar.

“The fire was brought under control after an hour and a half. Seven firefighting units worked to douse the flames,” he said.

However, he could not confirm the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage, reports bdnews24.com.

Witnesses said they saw smoke billowing out of Ahsanullah Traders, a gunny sack warehouse near Station Road around 10:30 pm. The Fire Service was informed immediately.

The flames spread rapidly, engulfing nearby warehouses -- JK Traders, Jaan Enterprise, and Alhamdulillah Traders -- burning the stored goods.

Khulna Boro Bazar Traders Association General Secretary Shohag Dewan said all shops were closed when the fire broke out. “They learnt that a good-laden truck was passing by when an electric wire tore and fell on the roof of the Ahsanullah Traders.”

“When the wire fell on the tin roof of the warehouse, it sparked a fire, which quickly spread to the adjacent shops.”
