Four people were killed and one child injured as a boat capsized in the Boulai River at Jamalganj upazila in the district last night.
The deceased were identified as Beauty Chakraborty, 50, Kalpana Sarkar, 55, Rudra Sarkar, 4 and Ganga Sarkar, 6.
The injured child, Nirab Sarkar, 10, was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital for treatment, reports BSS.
The incident occurred around 9:30pm in the Boulai River under Beheli union of the upazila, said Jamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Islam.
A boat carrying 50 to 60 passengers along with goods capsized while taking a turn near Hararkandi mor, he added.
The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their relatives, OC said.
