Four policemen among seven killed in attack on police station in Noakhali

Seven people, including four policemen, have been killed in an attack at Noakhali’s Sonaimuri Police Station.

Noakhali Superintendent of Police or SP Mohammad Asaduzzaman confirmed the news of the mob lynching, which occurred between 5:15pm and 6pm on Monday, reports bdnews24.com.

The deceased policemen have been identified as SI Md Basir, ASI Md Nasir, and constables Mosharraf and Gias.

Bakhtiar Uddin, the chief of Sonaimuri Police Station, was also shot five times.

Locals said that, upon hearing the news of Hasina’s departure following her resignation, demonstrators gathered near the Sonaimuri bypass area to celebrate.

However, around 5:30pm some attackers began to throw bricks and stones at the Sonaimuri Police Station. A person was shot dead when police fired their guns from inside the police station.

Several people were also shot after the agitated crowd surrounded and vandalised the police station.

Later, the attackers set the station on fire, injuring more than 100 people in the incident.

At least 34 of the injured people have been admitted to the Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital.

According to hospital officials, there is a policeman among them.

The hospital’s supervisor, Dr Mohammad Helal Uddin, said as many as 37 people were brought to the hospital with severe injuries. Three of them were later declared dead upon examination.

Currently, 34 people are being treated at the hospital. The official also said the majority of them were injured at Sonaimuri.

SP Asaduzzaman said: “There were 13 policemen there in total. We have found the dead bodies of four policemen so far. Of them, three were decapitated.”

“The building is covered in smoke. The truth will be found after the building has been recovered,” he added.

In response to another question from the media, the SP said: “I have heard of the death of three ordinary citizens. Their identities have not been confirmed yet.”

On the other hand, there are reports of another group that attacked the Chatkhil Police Station around 5pm on Monday. Almost every room inside the police station was vandalised and set ablaze.
