A Dhaka court has remanded four suspects to police custody for questioning over a street mugging in Dhaka’s Moghbazar.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan Jennifer passed the order on Friday after a hearing on the remand plea filed by the investigation officer Sub-Inspector Ibrahim Khalil of Hatirjheel Police Station.

The suspects are Md Sohel Rana, Md Jibon alias Hridoy, Md Shamim, and Mokbul Hossain.

According to police, Sohel, Jibon, and Shamim carried out the mugging, while Mokbul is accused of purchasing the stolen goods.

Police had sought five days’ remand for each of the four. Defence lawyer Sentu Alam Khan sought bail on behalf of Sohel, Jibon, and Hridoy, but Mokbul had no legal representation during the hearing.

The magistrate granted three-day remand for all four, said Sub-Inspector Moksedul Islam of the court’s prosecution wing.

The mugging took place around 9pm on May 18 in the Greenway alley of Moghbazar.

The crime drew widespread attention after CCTV footage of the incident circulated on social media, prompting police to launch a targeted operation.

On Thursday, police arrested Sohel in Keraniganj and the other three suspects in Mohammadpur.

Officers also recovered the snatched bag, Tk 9,600 in cash, a mobile phone, two machetes used in the attack, and the motorcycle used for the escape.

The viral video shows a young man walking with a bag slung over his shoulder when three helmeted men on a motorbike intercept him.

Two of them brandish machetes and corner the victim near a house gate. One is seen striking the man.

As the muggers seize the victim’s bag, two of them hop back onto the motorbike.

When the victim grabs the bike’s front wheel and pleads with them, the armed men dismount and beat him again, pushing him aside.

One of the attackers then charges at the victim again with the machete before they flee.

The entire incident lasted less than a minute. None of the attackers’ faces were visible in the footage as they were wearing helmets.
